What are moles?

Moles, or nevi, are a very common brown spot on our skin that can come in a variety of shapes, and sizes. It is important to the health of your skin to keep an eye on them, and to identify any changes, or suspicious moles, that may present themselves. For many of us moles are something that we are born with. However, we can also develop moles from exposure to the sun. Often times, fair skinned individuals have more moles due to lower amounts of pigment in the skin. Over time due to sun exposure and the natural process of aging, most individuals develop more moles that are harmless. It is vitally important though to make sure that you and your family’s skin is healthy and happy by having regular skin care checkups.

Why are skin care checkups important?

Skin care checkups allow your dermatologist to thoroughly examine the health of your skin, and to identify the moles that you have, and any irregularities that may exist with them. Although most moles are harmless, at times a mole may become cancerous. It is vital to have a skin care checkup immediately, if you notice that any mole you, or your loved ones, have changes in size, becomes larger, changes in shape (including irregular edges), changes in color, either darkening or developing multiple shades. Also, if a mole becomes itchy, causes pain, bleeds, is inflamed, or becomes raised, these signs could be an indication that the mole is cancerous. Through regular skin care check-ups your dermatologist is able to identify these changes and discuss treatment options.
